Students Receive Arizona Latino Legislative Caucus Scholarships

STATE CAPITOL, Phoenix Members of the Arizona Latino Legislative Caucus and Governor Jan Brewer awarded 11 Academic Scholarship Awards during a presentation on March 31, 2009 in the Governor's Office.

“Due to the economic climate the Arizona Legislative Latino Caucus decided to focus on the academic scholarships and will be awarding 11 scholarships to high school and college students in honor of the life and legacy of César E. Chávez,” said Sen. Richard Miranda, Co-Chair of the Arizona Latino Legislative Caucus.

Governor Jan Brewer will join co-chairs Representative Ben Miranda and Senator Richard Miranda and Caucus members in presenting the scholarships to the students. The Caucus has awarded over $50,000 in the past seven years to students who showed leadership in their schools and communities, a desire to continue their education, and a financial need.

The scholarship recipients are from throughout Arizona and they plan to further their education at community colleges as well as the major colleges including University of Arizona, Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University.

This year, the Caucus chose to honor César E. Chávez entirely through scholarships instead of awarding fewer scholarships and holding an annual event at the Capitol.
