President’s Visit Comes at Crucial Time for Arizona
STATE CAPITOL, Phoenix – Senate Democrats are absolutely thrilled that President Barack Obama will be in Phoenix next week to speak about the economic stimulus plan.
“President Barack Obama’s trip could not come at a better time. The cuts in the Republican budget have put our state’s economic vitality and education system in serious jeopardy. The stimulus plan needs to be part of the solution to not gutting our state,” said Democratic Leader Sen. Jorge Luis Garcia (D-Tucson).
The Republican budget passed in the early hours of Jan. 31 cut nearly $282 million in funding for K-12 and higher education.
“Now, when our state is ranked 50 in K-12 spending and pupil to teacher ratio, this is not the time to keep cutting at our system,” said Sen. Garcia. “Republicans, as evidenced in the Education Committee meeting today, do not see the relationship between properly funding our schools and academic achievement. With this type of ideology, it is plausible that the Majority will keep cutting away at our children’s future.”
