Get Your Stories Straight

STATE CAPITOL, Phoenix – The Arizona Republic reported on Saturday that Governor Jan Brewer may be plotting a spring special election to ask Arizona voters for a tax increase and to remove protections from voter-approved programs.

“Folks, get your stories straight. Are you going to increase taxes or are you going to give tax breaks? It does not make sense to increase taxes when a Republican priority is to make permanent the equalization property tax rate,” said Democratic Leader Sen. Jorge Luis Garcia (D-Tucson). “We still need to review all of our options and better options are available.”

While Arizonans are struggling during an economic recession and 219,000 of you are unemployed, Gov. Brewer wants you to find more money to pay taxes. While the Republican Majority continues to dole out tax credits to private entities, they want you to pay more taxes. The Department of Economic Security reported Friday that they would be cutting childcare assistance to families, which minimally affects 20,000 children, but those families will be asked to pay more taxes.

We encourage you to contact your legislators and let them know that you do not want your taxes increased while the Republican Majority continues to give away Arizona’s tax dollars.
